I 6'LnaJtZy have, been able, to make, the
Florida trip I had been looking fioAuKLAd
to hor several months. On the way, I
visited with Pat Heckard in Alachua. Then
had an enjoyable meeting with C. R. Clark,
John Henry, John Stribhei and Lee Wood-
buJiy in St. Peters burg . Unhortunately,

(-006 not able to contact Mas. White in
Tampa. White visiting friends in Punta
Goarda, I talked with Chester Roberts in
Arcadia.

At this writing I am getting ready to
leave Key West , and hope to be able to
contact more Florida members on my way
home. (Before this got mailed , I made it
to Miami where I talked with Richard Cassity. Learned that he is a brother-in-law oh
Fred Lynch , one oh my Oak Ridge h^icnds and NSC A member., small world, isn’t it?).

Since this is the last issue oh SCRIP TALK behore the May meeting in Beckley, W\J,
this is the last opportunity hor me to encourage you to attend. In addition to the
opportunity to meet old hriends and make new trades, you’ll also have the chance to
make new hriends. Anyway you look at it, you should have another enjoyable experience.

The business meeting on Saturday, May 3rd should be interesting. We plan to talk
about non- pro hit incorporation hor NSC A, to present a draht oh a proposed Code oh
Ethics and to discuss progress oh the revised edition oh the Edkins Catalogue. We
will also be presenting the ANCIL V0N0H0E trophy hor the best article in SCRIP TALK
during the past year.

Another highlight oh the meeting will be the award presentation to the member who
has signed up the most new members during the past year. Elsewhere in this issue
Walter will be giving the current standings. This, however, does not necessarily
mean that the ultimate winner will be the current leader ih someone else would want
it badly enough!!

One hin&£ note - many oh you have signed one but less than | \ive new members since
May oh 1978. Although we have stated on several occasions that you can get a FREE
copy oh the Edkins’ Catalogue when you sign up a total oh ive new members, a lot oh
you still have only one, two or three new members. I would urge you to get to work
and round out the £Eve members behore the May meeting because the FREE book deal
expires at that time !!

Also, we have another good deal, in that hor only $16.00, a new member can obtain
both and Edkins’ Catalogue and one year’s membership in NSCA. So, sign up that new
member and sell him or her a book hor a total oh $16.00. This saves the member $3.00
and gets you another credit on your FREE book deal. In this way we all benehit !J

See you in Beckley .

Anyone that offers reproductions, fakes, fantasies, restrikes, etc. for sale that do

When DAVIS-WI LSON COAL COMPANY sold out to CONSOLIDATION COAL COMPANY, Md.

SCR I POLQGY - A NEW FEATURE

FOR "SCRIP TALK" BY:

CHARLES ROSS, BOX 491, SPENCER,
WEST VA. 25276

Many favorable com¬
ments were received
on the initial run of
the material by Scriptor
Charles Ross. A second
installment is being run
in this bulletin and will
be continued until the total
of 40 pages is complete....

PI eas_ e jao t£ tha t_t he jcomnpn set_s_and__the__
rare_and_S£arce rnt er i£l_arejno- tyl Is ted . _. .

The common is Ttems that were listed ten or more
times and can be determined by the low rarity numbers
in Edkins... The scarce and rare material that has never

appeared in a mail sale can also be determined by a high rarity *

number in Edkins. Many collectors have indicated that they are making
notes in their catalogs and listing books so that they will have a current
price guide on the various company listings... Rarity values have certainly changed
since the Edkins catalog and these changes will be reflected in the next edition. In
the meantime, the Ross figures will give you good reference material !

"PIS AND DATA" as space permits.... SCRIPTOR PAUL JENSEN has turned up some interesting
new items as follows: Beatty Coal Co., Mascoutah, Ill'. 7^t — Big Creek Mercantile Co.
(c/s for Big Creek Colliery Co.) Cuba, Illinois 5p — "Pioneer Coal & Coke Co., Pioneer, -
• Tenn. 5p — The Roslyn Fuel Co., Roslyn, Washington 5p — Dominion Coal Co. Inc., Penn- 1
ington Gap, Va. 5p — Big Four Wilmington Coal Co., Coal City, Illinois 25c — Cheney
L. & C. Co. .. (Cheney Lbr. & Coal Co. - coal mind and logging camp) Allgood, Ala. 20>C • —

The Blythe Supply Co. (c/s for Atwood Coal Co.) Blyth, Iowa 2c — Mitchell Supply Co.

(c/s for Greenridge Fuel Co.) Greenridge, Iowa 5c — Lockman Supply Co. (c/s for Central
Coal Co.) Lockman, Iowa 5 & 10c dated 1898, 10c dated 1915, and 50 & $1 dated 1896 —

Alta Coal Division of S.C.D. Co., Sumiton, Ala. $1 — North-East Coal Co. Inc., Thealka,
Ky. set 5 to $1 and same company White House , Ky. set 5 to $1... some real nice tokens !!
(You might want to note these listings in your reference books!).... Too, in event you
did not know, Betty Jensen is recovering from very serious surgery and would certainly
appreciate a card from you.... Many know that she has served as hostess at some of our
NSCA conventions... Why not drop- her a card at: P. 0. Box 271, Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075...
Several scriptors have indicated that- they plan to attend the big Token Show in Chicago
on March 29 & 30, 1980 being sponsored by Scriptors Paul Cunningham and Rich Hartzog...
SCRIPTOR CLAUDE TRAVIS notes that a regional scrip event will be held at Lake Malone Inn
in Western Kentucky on Sunday, April 13th. Members close by might want to attend this
event. The inn is located at Dunmor, Kentucky - Phone 502/657/2121... Might be additional
info on this in this bulletin; . . . Approx, a dozen NSCA members attended the mini-meeting
in Fayetteville in February and some good swaps and trades were completed ... . At the
coin show in Charleston on February 23rd, we: cpuld have had a NSCA meeting - I saw among
others, Snodgress, Chappo, Overton, Miller, Nicholls, Bumgardner, Matheny, Colley, Hall,
and. possibly others .... Incidentally , the coin dealers with tables were mostly busy with
silver purchases and some didn't even have coins displayed... it was a regular circus to
- watch all- Of the transactions being made.... It is my personal thought that more and mpre
people will be turning to token collecting due to the great increase in coin prices....
Certainly our ranks should grow as people come to know the great hobby of coal, lumber

and manufacturing token collecting !! Are YOU doing anything to acquaint people with oui

hobby ?? _ SCRIPTOR JAMES COOPER, 2713 Cumberland Ave., Middlesboro, Ky. 40965, has a

new listing with fixed prices on complete and partial sets... Drop him a note!! Better
be making your plans NOW for Beckley, West Va. on Friday and Saturday - May 2 and 3 .. . .

It promises to be a good one !! More later as time and space permits .

HART, J. M., Rockhold, Ky. -1 listing (1975) Set 5C thru 50c $9-05* Not too rare and
I have had a set for man/ years. (Ed note: My records Indicate NO $1 made.)

HARVEY COAL CORP. INC., Harveyton, Ky. - 1,5,10 and $1 sold. $3-10 to $7*30. I never

could get anywhere with this company. (Ed note: After all the looking, I have never
located a 50c MM pc.)

HATFIELD CAMPBELL CREEK COAL CO., Plymouth, WV - 2 listings 1 set sold. (1972 James)
sold for $52.50. I wanted this set badly, but Walter and Ancil were bidding on it
so I stayed out. Walter finally won out.. A 1$ pc sold for $3.60 in 1976. (Ed note:
I'll never forget this auction and the reactions when I paid that much for a set of
scrip! Unbelievable at the time! Today, many, many sets go for more!).

HAWLEY COAL CO. - 6 listings 1 set sold (James) $32.50. No 50C piece has been

on this one because it is an interesting set. 14 sets sold from $5.35 to $22.80.

An unknown quantity of this scrip turned up several years ago. Few matched sets of
ISC1 have been sold. The 1c is very difficult. Probably destined to be a $30 to
$40 set within the next year or two. No sets sold since 1975. (Ed note: I still
have only a mixed set ISC1 and 2.. I show 10c 1 SC 1 as key to set!).

HOWARD COLLIERIES - I have two listings both in 1979- 1 lot had 2 tokens; 5 sticks

powder and 10 caps $14.40. The other had two tokens: 5 caps and 10 sticks powder

involving one 25* and one 50* that sold for $12. each which would make this in the

$75 to $100 range for a set.)

IROQUOIS COAL MINING CO. - 1 listing (1976) Ex-Donohoe 10* pc $5-50. All scrip in

time in five diff Christensen & Stone mail bid sales. It took almost a year but I

JACKSON FOURSEAM MINING CO., Jackson, Ky. - 2 listings (1975) $1 bekwd J cut wm 01

KOPPERS STORES, INC. - Several sets of the parens cut type () sold. Most collectors
probably have the counterfeit dollar. It is very deceptive. After checking Edkins'
book, I found that mine is counterfeit. The set with KS cut, on the other hand, is
a nice set. 7 sets sold (James) $6.00 to HP $21.60.

Your Secretary is a candidate again for the TAMS Board of Governors.. It is his
thought that NSCA should have strong representation on the TAMS board. . Too, a
number of other NSCA members are also active in TAMS and would appreciate your
vote. . While the official nominees have not been announced, Paul Cunningham,
Dave Schenkman, Rich Hartzog, Ben Odesser (members of NSCA) will probably be
candidates ! !

Incidentally, the TAMS meeting this year will be held in Cincinnati, Ohio as a
part of the ANA (American Numismatic Assoc.) convention in August. This will be
close to West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee where the majority of our NSCA
members live. It would be a rewarding trip for you if you can make it ! ! Too,
if you are interested in TAMS membership, drop me an SASE and a blank will be
mailed to you pronptly ! I

“FLORIDA TRADE TOKENS’

by

C. H. Clark

This hardback catalogue has 28? pages. Pictures are
integrated with the stories and descriptions of about
2,000 Florida trade tokens. Hundreds of these tokens
were used at lumber, turpentine, crate, and other
company commissaries. The maverick list should help
with the attribution of Ingle and other ’’system’' scrip,
lumber, and lumber-related tokens used in all areas of
Florida. While the list of Florida’s known commissary
tokens is helpful to serious scrip collectors, the book
has much more. It covers a period from the 1830’s to
1979... from the old post exchange and other military
tokens, to the modern food stamp change tokens.

Price: $15.00, Postpaid

(Florida residents should add a 4.7® sales tax of 60j^. )

FLASH !! Just as we were preparing to make the final 'wrap-up' on this edition of
the bulletin, I received a phone call from Arlie Slabaugh in Pennsylvania. Arlie
is making plans to attend his first NSCA Convention and will either fly to Beckley
or Charleston and be with us ! As most of you are aware, Arlie is the President
of TAMS (Token and Medal Society) for the current year. In addition, he was the one
who encouraged me to work on a scrip catalog many years ago. He cautioned me at the
time that I should take plenty of time to assemble the material and I did not realize
the importance of his suggestion at that time due to my desire to hurry the feeble
catalog effort. Tbo, he was a valuable advisor for Don Edkins on the present cata¬
log and his article from the TAMS Journal was reprinted in the Edkins' catalog. I
have known Arlie for several years through correspondence and through our meetings
each year at TAMS. He is the author of many numismatic publications and is currently
employed by The Franklin Mint. I know that every NSCA member will join me in giving
President Arlie a great Scriptor welcome to Beckley in May.
